An invitation arrived inviting the Jensen family for a luncheon with the President of Latvia…

RIGA, Latvia – Wait, what? Me…and my family? The President? Why?!!!
The President wanted to honor adopting and foster families for helping Latvia’s children, and I guess that also includes this American girl living in Latvia with 3 Latvian children! So we went.
More stressed than ever about what I should wear to meet the President of Latvia, I thought about canceling more than once. But we made it to the front doors, told security our names and since we were on the VIP list, we walked in. How cool!
President Vējonis made a speech that moved everyone in attendance. He spoke about the issues in the orphanages and how he is in support of making sure that kids grow up in family environments. As I listened to him speak, I realized that this new Latvian leader is different in his authenticity, and I felt a hope that I haven’t felt. The President got emotional as he spoke, having to choke back his tears more than once. He is passionate and has a heart for orphans. Praise Jesus!
Many people have spoken well of him, but I never expected to see this level of realness in a President, and a President that was standing in front of me. I had the privilege of being introduced to him personally by a friend who works closely with the President. We had a great conversation and he made me feel so comfortable that I did the unthinkable.
Ever since we received the Presidential invitation, my daughter Amanda spoke non-stop about wanting to get a “selfie” with him. During our conversation, I gathered up the courage to ask him if he would be open to taking a selfie. A little scared that I was overstepping my bounds, he smiled widely and said “of course! Let’s go into the other room where there are not so many people.” Not only were we able to meet him, take pictures with him, have a good conversation with him, but also my daughter was able to take a “selfie” with the President!
What an amazing day it was!
