Fall projects and spring opportunities
Is there anything new to report from Eagles Wings? Yes! EW staff have been busy beavers. Even to the point of catching one of the characters that like to dam up our drainage ditches and putting him on the dinner table! If you’ve never tried beaver, may I recommend you do so? Very tasty when prepared by Aelita.
Seasonal fall chores include preparing the camp for winter. That means putting away the boats, trampoline, summer sports equipment, etc. We found that the gazebos were just the place for such storage. We also are keeping firewood for the cabins dry in one of the gazebos. We plan to build a wood shed, but that will have to wait another year. We did build a new pump house that looks like a miniature log cabin.
We recently installed a wood stove in the second cabin. Last year we were able to put one in the first
cabin. Now that both cabins can be heated with firewood, we expect a dramatic decrease in our electricity bill! A big thanks to all who gave money for the stoves!
Shepherding sheep also takes time. As the grass quits growing, the sheep move from one pasture to the next, eating the last tasty morsel of the year. Then it is time to head for the barn and start feeding hay. November and December are our breeding months and this year two new German rams joined our flock. We hope that they will be with us for some years to come as bringing new animals in from Germany isn’t as easy as it sounds! We
are looking forward a new batch of lambs in April and May.
I mentioned that we plan to build a wood shed. We also need to expand the sheep barn in the spring as the flock itself is expanding. So we have converted the old barn into a sawmill and work shop. This was no small undertaking as much ground work was required to get rid of the mud that was all around. Now that it is finished, we have a dry work area where we can mill logs from our forest all year around. We also have a better place to keep and use the tools that came in the container from Bend a few years ago.
That container was recently moved to a more convenient location.
We would like to invite you to come to EW this spring and help with the barn building. Dates are May 21-June 3. We estimate a cost of $12,000 and have raised about half that amount. Between now and then, we will busy ourselves sawing logs for barn boards! If interested, let us know.
And what about ministry use at this time of year? Well, we had church camp and youth camp in the fall. We had a great New Year’s party a couple of weeks ago. Other Christians come out from time to time and use the facility. We also have a weekly family time on Saturday evenings for local believers. The sauna is the big winter attraction! And finally the snow has come.
We are so thankful for all of you who join us in this ministry by giving, praying and coming! May God bless you and keep you near Himself in 2012!
